Ladysmith Black Mambazo Portland Concert reviews
Star Wars!
"Delightful Ladysmith Black Mambazo was. To see the conductor with the film clips in the background and hear the live orchestra was magical.
Some other things disappointed me very much. I expected to see a LOT more special effects to accompany the film clips and music, given the different types of technology available today and considering the Sci-Fi subject matter. The green lasers were cool, but those were the extent of the effects. Really? Green Lasers? Oh yes, and fog. That's it!? Yup.
Would have been hard to have R2-D2 wheel out on stage for some comical banter with his pal C-3PO? Even some nice static props or stage sets would have helped enhance the experience a lot. The stage and arena were very bare bones and plain, other than some sculptural prop lights and a couple of Tie-Fighter-ish panels hanging from the ceiling. I'm sure there are budgetary concerns, but I still think they could have done more.
The "pre-show" consisted of various props displayed randomly around the stadium perimeter. The best props for me were Chewbacca and maybe C-3PO. Where was Boba Fet? R2? Scale models of ships?
They missed an opportunity to support a better overall production by offering a greater variety of Star Wars-In Concert retail items and memorabilia. Basically they offered only T-shirts, hats, really nice programs at $30 each, and some other forgettable cheap crap.
Really think they should have done so much more given the subject matter and the countless simple enhancements that could have been done. Loved it all-in-all and glad we went. Would have loved to get a program signed by Anthony Daniels. And I would have gladly paid extra for it. But again, I was expecting to come home with bagfuls of merchandise. All I came back with was a program."
